Job Summary The Associate Counsel will be responsible for defending lawsuits filed in Washington courts and other first-party insurance defense. This position requires a highly motivated and experienced attorney with a strong background in litigation, particularly in insurance defense and personal injury law. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work remotely, with initial training requiring 2-3 days in the office, and will be expected to travel as required for trials, hearings, depositions, and other case-related appearances. Key Responsibilities Researching laws and preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda to support the defense of lawsuits Rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department Preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath Defending cases by trial or dispositive hearing, as applicable Documenting files in a clear, concise, and professional written manner, to be understood by customers, clients, co-workers, and other employees of the organization Following complex instructions, resolving conflicts or facilitating conflict resolution, and demonstrating strong organization, priority setting, and multi-tasking skills Essential Qualifications 2-6+ years of experience in litigation, with a focus on insurance defense and personal injury law Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school Admission to the Washington Bar, with a valid license to practice law in Washington Ability to travel as required, including attending trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, clients, co-workers, and other employees of the organization Preferred Qualifications Civil litigation experience, particularly in insurance defense and personal injury law Experience with insurance defense-related litigation, including first-party insurance defense Ability to communicate effectively in a professional manner, both in person and via telephone, written correspondence, and email Skills and Competencies The successful candidate will possess a unique combination of skills and competencies, including: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex legal issues and develop effective solutions Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, clients, co-workers, and other employees of the organization Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong focus on collaboration and teamwork Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple cases simultaneously Ability to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information, with a strong focus on ongoing learning and professional development Career Growth Opportunities and Learning Benefits At GEICO, we are committed to providing our associates with opportunities for career growth and development.
